Garmin – revenues are down; – a new logo is up

November 10, 2010

When I checked out yesterday all that appeared was a blank index page with no links. Having noticed a few comments that it was seemingly operational the previous day (or at least visible) I returned today to take a look. The blank screen has been replaced with the following logo: logo

No links exist but obviously someone is paying attention to the fact that others are watching and talking about it. What will be interesting is if there is some quick movement here or whether this logo will sit staring at us for an eternity. I’ve added the site to my change detection logs and will update everyone if something significant occurs. In the meantime take a look at the final screenshot of just before closing down.

There is also an interesting article here on the business position for Garmin. It is interesting to note that Garmin’s fortunes are down, their core automotive navigation market is being eaten away, they have pulled out of smart phone development and that growth in their outdoor and marine markets was smaller than in the previous quarter. It comments that outdoor, marine and geocaching only make up 36% of Garmin’s business. With the failure of smart phones and a slipping core business it would not be surprising if Garmin were looking to diversify and create or build up markets. Anyone wanting to take a financial punt is warned to wait – Garmin shares are expected to fall more before they begin to rise again.

That logo looks like a mix between a Power Button and a File Not Found image. lol Also, I saw that earlier today, however now when I go there it’s asking me for a login and password, so they are getting super cereal now!

Have you noticed that exists and links to all existing alternative domestic opencaching web sites ?

the opencaching country sites are all registered to different people and are essentially sites run by individuals and volunteers.

Who is watching who? I note they are fully tracking views and google analytics is setup to monitor statistics on a site that does not really exist….:-)

I run the Opencaching.US site and got word of this on 11/10/2010. Will be interesting to see what they are up to.

Garmin seems to have watched to many times Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Their open caching logo fits perfectly on a brassard. Good PR idea, Garmin. 😦

Today I think it changed. Did I miss the tagline beneath the logo before? “your caches, your devices, your community” ?
